MEM Boredom Busters

What fun we had turning apples into applesauce! Yesterday’s Center Time included our “mise en place” (chef-speak for “make preparations”) for our first cooking project. After thoroughly washing hands and apples, our young foodies went straight to work! Students turned the crank on Grandma Harrison’s Apple Peeling Machine, and were impressed with how quickly 21 apples were peeled and sliced (into spirals!) Our chefs then cut the slices into  smaller pieces and placed them into a water and lemon juice bath overnight. We explored every part of the apple, measuring the long peels, and dissecting the cores to find seeds with magnifying glasses and tweezers. Today we put the apples into a crock pot with some cinnamon and maple syrup to cook and “mush” into applesauce.  The result was a tasty treat for our 2nd Foodie Friday! It's hard to believe we are nearing the end of September! We've settled into a routine, and are ready to jump into new centers, choices and experiences. We have started introducing social-emotional concepts during our circle time using photographs, puppets, role plays and group talks.  Our focus this week is on "Fair Ways to Play", and we have seen kids practicing their sharing, taking turns, playing together, and trading toys!  Here are some great photos of your kids working on centers together!
